November has a way of slowing us down just long enough to take stock. Tables get longer, calendars fill with family, and somewhere between the grocery runs and the football games, a question surfaces: am I actually thankful, or just busy?
Paul gives a short, demanding instruction in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18. Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. Notice he says give thanks in all circumstances, not for all circumstances. Gratitude is not pretending the hard year did not happen. It is choosing to look for God in the middle of it.
That kind of thankfulness is a practice, not a mood. It grows when we name specific things out loud, when we serve someone who cannot repay us, and when we worship alongside people who are also learning to count what God has done. At One Heart Church, an ARC church and a life-giving church in Westside Jacksonville and Green Cove Springs, that is a big part of what our Sundays and small groups are for.
Gratitude also has a way of turning outward. Thankful people notice needs, share generously, and make room at the table. If this season has been heavy for you, you are still welcome here. Bring the honest version of your year.
